Let's start with the basics, you need to map out your sets because it will allow you to stick to the map, and create the exact look your client is asking for. Think of it as if you are driving to a specific destination, you need a GPS ( formerly known as a map ) to tell you where you need to go, without the GPS you can end up somewhere else. Similarly, if you don't have a CLEAR map of the type of look you are trying to achieve for your client, you WILL get lost.

Before mapping, you need to assess your client's facial features and determine what type of style will compliment their features. ( We do have a full ONLINE course on mapping, where we teach you this in depth ) If interested in that course here is the link Lash Mapping Online Course

In this blog, we will discuss lash mapping guide, why is it important for lash artists, and lash mapping styles but before that, let's get to know what you need.

This is the simple part, all you'll need are some eye patches and a sharpie.

Apply the patches on the clients eyes appropriately

Simply, divide the client's eye into 2 quadrants, then again into 2 more, and lastly into 2 more, you will have a total of 8 quadrants. After doing this, you will add the lengths you plan on using for this specific client. Keep in mind the image below shows a very simple map, not all maps will be this simple, as you start learning how to work with multiple layers you will have more and more numbers and details on your mapping.

You can draw on the desired lengths, and mapping prior to your client's arrival (if you already know the map you plan to use, for example if this is a regular client, that always gets the same style ). * But generally you will need to map out the set directly on the client's eye patches once you have applied them.

PRO TIP: Before the appointment, ask the client to give you a photo of their eyes so you can check out their eye shape, and mentally try and offer them some styles that will be appropriate for them. This will save you a great amount of time, and you will look and feel more confident and knowledgable because you have done your reasearch.

LASH MAPPING STYLES

You can then pick your lash map once you've determined your client's eye shape. There are several lash types to choose from, we've included a few lash maps examples below:

Here are some very common lash mapping styles you can try on your clients.

Lash mapping styles
These styles are a little bit more advanced, as they include working with multiple lash layers and utilizing advanced curls like L and M curls which are not standard, and require some special training and skill.

Lash Mapping Styles

Cat: use the longest lashes towards the outside edge of the lashes to create the illusion of wide-set "exotic" eyes. If your client has Almond, close-set eyes this is an appropriate choice.

Doll : Applying lash extensions in the same direction as the natural lashes will give you fuller, longer-looking lashes while keeping the natural eyelash pattern. Almond and Upturned Eyes will work perfectly with this mapping.

Squirrel: To achieve this look, start short and gradually lengthen, with the halfway point being the longest length, before gradually shortening again.

So client that have Almond, Close-set, Downturned eyes are perfect clients for this type of lash style.

Squirrel lash mapping

Open eye: Establish the illusion of wide, open eyes by using longer lashes in the midsection of the lashes.  Almond and wide-set eyes go well together.

Kim K: One of the most common lash styles is Kim K. To achieve the Kim K look, spikes or the longer lengths are placed in different parts of the eye to produce a wispy set. Clients with Round and Almond eyes are both perfect for this lash style.

Cat eye lash extensions

This cat eye look was achieved with L curl lashes in the outer corners for additional lifting, however you can also achieve this look with more standard curls like C, CC and D curls. This mapping style is ideal for clients with downward facing eyes as it will lift up the eyes, and give an illusion of a non surgical lifting.

DOWNWARD FACING EYES

Downward facing eyes have a tendency to look droopy if they are styled incorrectly. There are some contraindications for clients with this type of eye shape. You really want to avoid the squirrel mapping since it will make the eyes look really droopy like sad puppy dog eyes. We want to avoid this at all cost.

Try this mapping which will elevate the clients eye and correct the visual dropping effect.

HOW TO WORK WITH A CLIENT WHOSE EYES ARE FAR APART?

  1. Avoid cat eye and squirrel mapping since it will emphasize the distance between the 2 eyes making them look even further apart.
  2. Avoid really long lengths and strong curls like D DD, L and M on the outer corners as this will emphasize the outer corners.
  3. Pick dolly eye mapping and or a natural mapping in order to remove the emphasis on the outer corner of the clients eye and improve emphasis on the inner corner by filling in the inner corners fully.
  4. Fill in the inner corners really well, as this will really emphasize the eyes coming closer together and looking more balanced.
  5. Experiment with colors as this will put more emphasis on the clients eyes and remove the emphasis on the eyes looking not balanced.

Eyelash mapping guide: Avoid mistakes like this in lash mapping

Lash mapping for beginners

LET'S ASSESS THIS IMAGE:

This image shows us why mapping is so incredibly important. On the left, we did a Cat eye mapping, and it emphasized the eye facing downwards. Additionally, we used lengths 8-15mm C curl, which was too long, and way too heavy which ended up looking really “droopy “ and made the client's eye look very sad. ( puppy dog eyes ). The mistakes that were made here were : wrong mapping, wrong length, and quite possibly wrong curl.

The right eye is what the client's eye would have looked like with the right mapping “ the doll eye would have been ideal and much more complementary for this client “ Additionally, shorter lengths 7-12mm, would have decreased the dropping of the lashes. A lifting curl would have been great, such as an M curl or L curl.

This type of mapping places most of the emphasis on the middle of the eye and away from the outer corners, elevating the eye.

LASH MAPPING: L curl eyelash extensions

The L curl has a flat base, I would recommend using this lash curl for clients who have straight lashes pointing downward. This curl will give your clients a dramatic/ exotic look and most clients really like it because it is really unconventional.

This lash curl looks best to those clients who have downturned lashes, L curl is a great one to help the lashes lift those lashes and on clients that have hooded eyes.

LASH MAPPING: M curl eyelash extensions

The M curl is another curl from the exotic family of foxy trending curls.

It's important to remember that this curl pairs beautifully with the C and CC curls

As you can see in this picture below the CC curl lashes have been used for the inner corners. This is done to achieve a softer look for the inner corners.
