WHAT IS LASH MAPPING?

Lash mapping is something lash artists do to plan how they'll put eyelash extension on clients natural lashes. It's a bit like planning how to build a pretty building using a blueprint. By carefully considering factors like the client's eye shape, desired lash style, and the health of their natural lashes, the lash artist maps out where each extension will be applied.

Let's start with the basics, and you need to map out your sets because it will allow you to stick to the map and create the exact look your client is asking.

Think of it as if you are driving to a specific destination. You need a GPS ( formerly known as a map ) to tell you where you need to go. Without the GPS, you can end up somewhere else.

Similarly, if you don't have a CLEAR map of the type of look you are trying to achieve for your client, you WILL get lost.

Before mapping, you need to assess your client's facial features and determine what type of style will compliment their features. ( We do have an entire ONLINE course on mapping, where we teach you this in-depth ) If interested in that course, here is the link Lash Mapping Online Course

Let's discuss the lash mapping guide, why it is essential for lash artists, and lash mapping styles. But before that, let's get to know what you need.

It is the simple part; you'll need some eye patches and a sharpie. For the client's eyelids, you will need an eyeliner.  First, Apply the patches on the client's eyes appropriately.

Divide the client's eye into two quadrants, then again into two more, and lastly into two more. You will have a total of 8 quadrants. After doing this, you will add the lengths you plan on using for this specific client. Keep in mind the image below shows a detailed map. Not all maps will be this simple. As you start learning how to work with multiple layers, you will have more and more numbers and details on your mapping.

You can draw on the desired lengths and mapping before your client's arrival (if you already know the map you plan to use, for example, if this is a regular client, that always gets the same style ). * But generally, you will need to map out the set directly on the client's eye patches once you have applied them.

PRO TIP: Before the appointment, ask the client to give you a photo of their eyes so you can check out their eye shape and mentally try and offer them some styles that will be appropriate for them. It will save you a significant amount of time, and you will look and feel more confident and knowledgeable because you have done your research, Prior to the client's appointment.

LASH MAPPING MADE EASY: YOUR STEP-BY-STEP CHECKLIST

Lash mapping is an essential step in creating stunning lash extensions that complement your client's unique features. Before you begin, it's crucial to consider various factors such as eye shape, angle, spacing, face shape, and even the direction and curl of the natural lashes.

ANGLE OF THE EYES

Take note of your client's eye angle, as it determines the positioning and direction of lash extensions. Eyes can be slightly upturned, slightly downturned or straight. Adjusting the lash placement based on the eye angle will create a harmonious and balanced look.

lash mapping guide book

SHAPE OF THE EYES

Understanding your client's eye shape is fundamental for creating a lash set that enhances their natural features. Recognize whether their eyes are almond, round, hooded, or monolid, as each shape requires different lash placement techniques to achieve the desired effect.

lash mapping guide

SPACING OF THE EYES

When it comes to eye spacing, ideally, there should be approximately one eye's width between each eye for a balanced look. If the eyes are closer together than one eye-width, they are considered close-set or narrow-set, while eyes that have more than one eye width between them are classified as wide-set.

This assessment helps in determining lash lengths and placement to achieve balance and symmetry.

SHAPE OF THE FACE

Consider your client's face shape when planning the lash set. For wider faces, more dramatic lash looks can be carried off effectively, while very narrow faces may appear overwhelmed by overly long lashes or wide cat-eye styles. Tailor the lash set to complement and harmonize with their unique facial structure.

NATURAL LASH MAPPING

As lash artists, we need to understand the importance of natural-looking lash extensions that perfectly complement your client's eye shape. That's where the art of natural lash mapping comes in. This technique involves carefully following the natural growth of the lashes, ensuring a seamless transition in length without any sudden changes. The goal is to achieve a stunning look that appears effortlessly natural and harmonizes with your client's unique eye shape.

Natural lash mapping

  • Natural lash mapping is particularly suited for clients with almond, round, and upturned eyes. By working with the natural growth of the lashes, you can create sets that blend flawlessly, enhancing your client's eyes in a subtle and elegant way.
  • However, it's worth noting that if your client has hooded, monolid, or downturned eyes, alternative lash mapping styles may be more suitable to accentuate their features.

DOLL EYE LASH MAPPING

If you're looking to make your client's eyes appear bigger and correct the appearance of downturned eyes, the Open eye or doll eye lash mapping style is a perfect choice. This technique involves strategically placing longer lash extensions over the iris, following straight lines, and then gracefully dropping down on the inner and outer corners.

  • This lash mapping is a versatile style that works well for almond eyes, monolid eyes, downturned eyes, hooded eyes, and wide-set eyes. By creating the illusion of larger eyes, this mapping style enhances your client's natural beauty.
  • However, it may not be the most suitable option for round eyes, upturned eyes, individuals with a narrow face shape, or close-set eyes.

CAT EYE LASH MAPPING

The Cat Eye lash mapping technique focuses on starting with shorter lash extensions that gradually increase in length from the inner corner of the eye towards the pupil, and then dramatically extend even further towards the outer corner. This technique aims to make the eyes appear wider and can correct the appearance of close-set eyes.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHAT WILL BEST SUIT YOUR CLIENT?

First, let's determine their eye shape:

Determine if your client's eyelid has a crease. If the upper eyelid is smooth, your client has a monolid, considered a primary eye shape.

Look at the outer corners of your client's eyes and imagine a straight, horizontal line extending from the outer corner to your client's pupil. If the line is above their pupil, your client has upturned eyes, and if the line is below their pupil, your client has downturned eyes, both of which are considered basic eye shapes.

Once you have determined the eye shape of your client, it's time to consider what type of mapping will compliment their eyes.

It's important to know which shape will best suit their eyes. Here are some guidelines:

eyelash mapping styles

Close set eyes can be enhanced with cat and squirrel lash lashes. These styles give your client a natural look while adding volume and length to their lashes.

Wide set eyes work well with dolly and squirrel lashes. This gives them a more dramatic look without being too overpowering.

Protruding eyes should be enhanced with squirrel and cat lashes. The drama of these lash styles will balance out the protruding effect of the eye shape.

Round eyes are best suited for squirrel and cat lashes. These styles are often more delicate and look best on square faces too!

Monolid eyes can work well with either natural, squirrel, or dolly lashes. Both styles will enhance the eye shape, so it's up to you as the lash artist to decide which type of lash looks best with your client's facial features.

For almond-shaped eyes, natural, squirrel, and dolly lashes all work well. Depending on how deep your client's eye sockets are, you might want to go with a fuller style like natural or squirrel lashes—or even a thick set of cat eyelashes!

If your client has upturned eyes, you'll want to choose a lash style that will bring out the natural beauty of their eyes. Natural lash styles are great for this, as they look very natural and help to highlight the color and shape of the eye. Cat lashes are also a good choice, as they give a more dramatic look than natural ones but retain some of their softness.

If you're working with clients with downturned eyes, you'll want to focus more on bringing out the shape of their eyes. Squirrel lashes are great for this, as they help to create a more dramatic appearance and give an illusion of depth in the eye socket—this can be helpful for clients with smaller eyes or dark skin tones. You can also use cat lashes to bring out this effect even further or dolly lashes if your client has larger eyes or lighter skin tones!

The shape of your client's face can significantly impact what kind of lashes suit them best.

Here's how to tell which style will look best on your face:

Eyelash mapping

Let's start with the oval. Oval-shaped faces are very natural, so it's important to keep the look that way by going for a natural lash style like a squirrel. Squirrel lashes also add a lot of length and volume to your client's lashes, which is perfect for an oval face shape because it will make the eyes appear bigger and more open. If your client wants something more dramatic-looking, they should go with a dolly!

Next up, we have hearts. Your client can choose between natural or squirrel. If they want something subtle but still noticeable, go with a squirrel!

Round: Round face shapes are the most common face shape and are best suited for natural lash style. The round shape is wide at the cheekbones and narrows toward the chin. Round faces often have a full or rounded jawline and eyes that are close together. They can look like they have big eyes because the cheeks are so high. Lashes that are too long can make the eyes look smaller.

Round faces with short eyelashes should try a more natural style like a dolly or soft curls to balance out their features. They should avoid lash styles that are too dramatic or have a lot of volume because they will make it harder for them to open their eyes wide enough!

Square: Square face shapes are angular faces. They tend to be slim but have broad foreheads and narrow chins, making it hard for them to show off their features! Squares can pull off any style of lashes, but they would do well with a more dramatic style like the cat eye or squirrel! Spikes can also work on square faces because they draw attention back toward the eyes!

Diamond-shaped faces are perfect for natural lashes. This shape is characterized by its sharp angle at the cheekbones, which means that a dolly lash style would look perfect on a diamond face. The dolly style has a slight curve in the middle, which makes it ideal for those with smaller eyes.

Long faces are perfect for cat and squirrel lash styles. This face shape is characterized by having a longer length than width, so they should avoid styles with an elongated curl or length—this will make their eyes appear even longer! Instead, they should choose styles with more volume, or like cat or squirrel.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT LASH MAPPING STYLES WITH PICTURES?

You can then pick your lash map once you've determined your client's eye shape. There are several lash types to choose from; we've included a few lash map examples below:

Wispy Lash Extension is a technique where a handmade lash fan uses 2-6 lashes, then applied using alternating lash lengths, which gives them the appearance of a False Strip Lashes & also known as the Kim-K look. Wispy Volume Lash Extension Full Set suits clients who desire a strip lash look.

CAT EYE LASH MAPPING

Cat eye mapping is a technique where shorter lash extensions are applied at the inner corner of the eye. The length of the lashes gradually increases from the inner corner towards the pupil, and then dramatically extends even further towards the outer corner. This technique aims to create a visually elongated and lifted appearance, resembling the shape of a cat's eye. It's used to make the eyes look wider and can also help correct the appearance of eyes that are close-set.

You can also achieve this look with more standard curls like C, CC, D or L. This mapping style is ideal for clients with downward-facing eyes as it will lift the eyes and give an illusion of nonsurgical lifting.

Remember that lash direction plays a vital role in achieving the desired anime effect, as each spike should be strategically placed for maximum impact.

Anime lashes often have fewer but larger and more pronounced spikes that are spaced apart, resulting in a bold and captivating look that differs from traditional wispy sets.

LASH MAPPING (SHORT / MEDIUM / LONG)

COMMON LASH MAPPING MISTAKES AND HOW TO FIX THEM

When you want your clients' eyelashes to look really nice, lash mapping is like a special tool you can use. It helps you figure out where to put the lash extensions so their eyes look amazing. But, sometimes, things don't go perfectly. No need to be upset! In this part, we'll discuss mistakes that often happen with lash mapping and teach you how to fix them.

    DOWNWARD FACING EYES

Downward-facing eyes tend to look droopy if they are styled incorrectly. There are some contraindications for clients with this type of eye shape. You want to avoid the squirrel mapping since it will make the eyes look droopy like sad puppy dog eyes. We want to avoid this at all costs.

Try this mapping to elevate the client's eye and correct the visual dropping effect. This is great for clients that need an extra lifting effect.

    LASH EXTENSIONS FOR HOODED EYES

Every eye shape demands a tailored approach to lash extensions, and hooded eyes require special attention. With a distinctive fold of skin partially covering the eyelid, lash styling for hooded eyes can be challenging. We'll explore some key mistakes to avoid, ensuring that your clients with hooded eyes leave with breathtaking lashes.

    AVOID OVERLY NATURAL CURLS

Steer clear of curls, such as B and C, that provide minimal lift and fail to impact hooded eyes.

    MIND THE LENGTH

The right lash length is crucial for hooded eyes. Short lengths, ranging from 6mm to 11mm, may get lost within the hooded fold and go unnoticed.

    STRIVE FOR APPROPRIATE MAPPING

Mapping is vital in determining lash placement. Strike a balance between a natural look and providing lift for hooded eyes. Avoid overly natural mapping, as it may yield underwhelming results. Focus on mapping techniques that emphasize the client's natural eye shape and provide lift. Consider incorporating longer lashes towards the outer corners or creating a subtle cat-eye effect, enhancing the eye's shape and lifting the hooded area.

Mastering lash extensions for hooded eyes requires attention to detail and skill. By avoiding common mistakes like using overly natural curls, choosing inadequate lengths, and employing underwhelming mapping techniques, you can ensure that your clients with hooded eyes leave your studio feeling confident and thrilled with their lash extensions.

HOW TO WORK WITH A CLIENT WHOSE EYES ARE FAR APART?

    1. Avoid cat-eye and squirrel mapping since it will emphasize the distance between the two eyes, making them look further apart.
    2. Avoid long lengths and strong curls like D DD, L, and M on the outer corners, emphasizing the outer corners.
    3. Pick dolly eye mapping and or a natural mapping to remove the emphasis on the outer corner of the client's eye and improve focus on the inner corner by filling in the inner corners.
    4. Fill in the inner corners well, emphasizing the eyes are coming closer together and looking more balanced.
    5. Experiment with colors as this will emphasize the client's eyes and remove the emphasis on the eyes looking not balanced.

      IDENTIFYING AND FIXING WRONG MAPPING

Lash mapping is a crucial skill that every lash artist must master to create stunning and harmonious lash extensions. However, even experienced artists can sometimes make mistakes in their mapping techniques

      Lash mapping for beginners

      LET'S ASSESS THIS IMAGE:

This image shows us why mapping is so essential. On the left, we did a Cat eye mapping, and it emphasized the eye facing downwards. Additionally, we used lengths 8-15mm C curl, which was too long, way too h, which looked really "droopy "and made the client's eye look very sad. ( puppy dog eyes ). The mistakes made here were: wrong mapping, wrong length, and possibly wrong curl.

The right eye is what the client's eye would have looked like with the correct mapping "the doll eye would have been ideal and much more complementary for this client. "Additionally, shorter lengths 7-12mm, would have decreased the dropping of the lashes. A lifting curl would have been great, such as an M curl or L curl.

This type of mapping places most of the emphasis on the eye's middle and away from the outer corners, elevating the eye, instead of making it appear droopy.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LASH CURLS?

For the right curl, we provide various lash curls and lengths. We want to educate each of you on the lash curls you can offer to your clients.

      Lash curls

      B LASH CURL

This lash curl will give you the added lift while still staying fairly natural. Almost the same specification as the J curl. This has just a bit curlier. The result will still be a natural look.

B curl is suitable for clients who want to look for something extra but still want to look natural.

      C LASH CURL

This lash curl is perhaps the most popular. It generally suits most clients because it provides the lift of a lash curler to open up the eyes. This is recommended on the slight curlier natural lash, and as a result, it will have a much stronger bond and lasting retention.

The reason why most clients prefer this is as it is much curlier and it has popping effects. As for me, C curl is my go-to lashes. That is just so perfect to work with.

C curl is for your clients who are eyeing a dramatic look—added so much attitude to the look. It opens up the eyes. Well, C curl works best!

      C+ LASH CURL

C+ is much more curled than C, and it can also be called natural curl. It is suitable for absolutely everyone.

      CC LASH CURL

CC curl is our hybrid curl. It is an excellent mix between the C and D curls.

      D LASH CURL

D curl is used to create full dramatic looks with lashes. This curl is perfect for clients looking for more lifting and great to use with the doll eye mapping.

This lash curl adds more lift than the C curl for added definition and sweep. This curl is not recommended for straight lashes and hooded eyes as it is a bit curly and might hurt your eyelids. The curliest and considered to be giving you that dramatic look. This curl would look better on the younger clients than the mature ones.

      L LASH CURL

The L curl has a straight bottom that transitions to and sits flat on the client's natural lash, ideal for moonlit eyes and clients with very sharp natural lashes.

This lash curl is best for clients with straight lashes that tip downward. This curl gives you a dramatic effect that most clients adore.

This lash curl is best for clients who have downturned eyelashes. L curl is also great for lifting those lashes and those with hooded eyes.

      L+ LASH CURL

This curl resembles the L curl with its sharp base but slightly curvier bend than the L curl.

      M LASH CURL

This curl is so new and exotic that clients are asking for it more and more. It emphasizes the client's eyes the perfect way if used correctly.

They are specially designed for an "OPEN EYE" look, with naturally straight and down. Clients with straight or downward-pointing natural lashes are ideal candidates for the M curl series.

      J LASH CURL

This curl is the most natural-looking, it's flat at the base, and the least curled of all the lash curls. The lash curl will lengthen your natural lashes but won't curl them significantly. This lash is perfect for individuals who want a more natural appearance. Because it looks too natural, it isn't used very often.

It is recommended to be used on straight lashes to ensure longer retention. So, if your clients opt to have an eyelash extension that looks so natural, the J curl is for your girl.

BONUS LASH TECHNIQUES AND LASH MAPPING

Natural-looking lash style is the perfect choice for those who love their lashes to look like they were just born that way—no drama, no fuss, just beautiful, fluttery lashes that look like you woke up with them.

If your client prefers some more drama, opt for the Fox style. These lashes are more dramatic than the classic option but have a natural look. They're perfect for someone who wants a little extra length and volume.

The Squirrel lash style is excellent if you want long lashes that add volume without being too much or too obvious. These lashes are perfect for someone who wants to keep her makeup simple but wants her eyes to stand out.

Doll eye lash mapping is a way to make your clients lashes look like a doll's eyes. With this style, longer lashes are put in the middle of the eye, making them seem bigger and rounder. The lashes get shorter towards the sides of the eyes. This technique tries to make a person look cute and innocent, like a doll. Many client like this style if they want their eyes to look sweet and charming.

One of the most common lash styles is Kim K. To achieve the Kim K look, spikes or the longer lengths are placed in different eye parts to produce a wispy set. Clients with Round and Almond eyes are both perfect for this lash style.

      CONCLUSION

Specific eye shapes and features will appear very differently on each client. There is no one-size-fits-all situation. Being a lash artist truly is an art. Lash mapping is an excellent way to build a lash extension set customized to your client's features.

Lash mapping also saves you time by allowing you to build the perfect variety of lash extensions in less time and go back to your lash mapping at any time.

No matter how long you've been lashing, the skills of correct lash mapping are essential to providing perfect lash extensions to your clients.
