CLASSIC, HYBRID (MIX) AND VOLUME LASH EXTENSIONS: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

If you are a beginner lash artist and new to eyelash extensions, you should know that different terms are used for other lash techniques—classic, hybrid, and volume.

When it comes to placement, each technique has in common is the isolation process. It is where you take one natural lash and attach it between your
isolation tweezers so that your extension doesn't get stuck to other lashes when you place it.

CLASSIC looks simple and more natural. It is applied on a one-to-one ratio, which means that one lash extension is attached to one natural lash only.

The lash application typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Classic lashes will not add much volume but will add length and provide an even lash line that opens up the eye.

HYBRID combines classic lash extensions, which is 30%, and volume lash extensions which are 70%. Hybrid gives more texture and adds volume and length to your client's lashes, resulting in a wispy look without a full volume set appearance.

VOLUME can vary from a natural look that adds volume and length to a dramatic and complete look. The lashes range in thickness from 2D to 6D, and anything higher than a 4D will make your client look like she's wearing strip lashes, which is the total opposite of the natural look that classic and hybrid extensions provide.

The application is made with a lash fan (premade or promade) using a tweezer of your choice. Whether or not the lash artist uses premade fans, the process usually takes 2-4 hours.

VOLUME LASHES AND MEGA VOLUME LASHES: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The number of lashes used to create the fan and the diameter of the lashes differentiates mega volume from volume lashes. You will use 2 to 5 lashes with diameters from 0.05 to 0.07 mm for the volume fan. You will use 6 to 16 lash extensions with diameters from 0.03 to 0.05 mm for the mega volume fan.

VOLUME LASHES SIZE AND WEIGHT: HOW TO DETERMINE?

The appropriate weight of a volume fan is managed by controlling two critical variables:

  • How many eyelash extensions can be combined to make a lash fan? “D” stands for dimension
  • The lash extensions length used to create a fan

A healthy natural lash can support a heavier volume fan than a thin natural lash. The health of the lashes should always come first.

  • With 0.07 mm diameter extensions, you can create 3D volume fans
  • With a 0.05 mm diameter, extensions can be used to create up to 7D volume fans
  • With 0.03 mm diameter extensions, you can make up to 12D volume fans

The number of lashes used in a lash fan and it’s diameter have a negative relationship. For example, if the number of lashes increases, the diameter must decrease to keep the lash fan's weight constant. The number of lashes must decrease as the diameter increases.

When comparing a volume fan to a single extension, negative space is the space that a single lash extension would otherwise occupy.

    VOLUME FAN NEGATIVE SPACE

Compared to a single 0.15 mm extension, a volume fan made of three 0.07 mm extensions creates a lot of negative space (brown). That is the reason why this volume fan isn't heavier.

Compared to a single 0.15 mm extension, a volume fan made of seven 0.05 mm extensions creates a lot of negative space (brown). That is the reason why this volume fan isn't heavier.

Compared to a single 0.15 mm extension, a volume fan made of twelve 0.03 mm extensions creates a lot of negative space (brown). That is the reason why this volume fan isn't heavier.

Most lash artists prefer 0.07 to use. The majority of clients seeking a natural or glamorous application prefer a length of 12 mm.

HOW TO GET DENSITY WITHOUT DAMAGING THE NATURAL LASHES?

The first thing you need to do is fill the mature lashes with volume lash fans that are the longest and heaviest, complementing the client's natural lashes. After, to complete the natural lashes, fill in the teenage lashes with shorter length and lighter weight. The teenage lashes will remain within the design as they grow to a mature size. They will be replaced when the next fill is completed.

LASH CURL: WHAT IS BEST TO USE FOR VOLUME LASHES?

D curls are the most dramatic and complete look, and they will be the most visible from the front. They are also the most popular curl to use.

    Lash curls chart

B curl has a very natural lash curl, and it will look like natural uncurled lashes.

C curl is the most widely used lash curl and is suitable for most clients.

CC curl is an excellent combination of the C and D curls.

D curl is used to achieve complete, dramatic looks. This curl is ideal for clients who want more lifting and works well with doll eye mapping.

L curl has a straight base that transitions and lies flat on the client's natural lash. It is a great curl for moonlit eyes and clients with very straight natural lashes.

L+ curl resembles the L curl with its strong base but slightly curvier bend than the L curl.

VOLUME LASHES: HOW DO YOU APPLY?

Apply fans evenly across the eyelash line, beginning at the inner corner of the eye. Fans should be applied to the client's natural eyelashes, not the eyelid tissue. As you place the fans, fluff the extension lightly to check its appearance.

    CONCLUSION

Like all lash extensions, Volume Lashes should last as long as your natural lash cycle if adequately cared. It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. Fill in is needed every 2 to 3 weeks to avoid the lashes looking patchy as they grow out.
