What is mental health? Mental health affects how you think, feel, and deal with relationships and situations. Mental health can change day-to-day and also over time. It is a bigger issue than most people realize, so many hesitate to speak out against it.

Mental health has been a topic most people are not open to talking about. I am a lash artist, and I have struggled with mental health issues since I began this journey. Being honest about my struggles and discussing them may help someone who has similar struggles or has friends/family struggling.

I know you're probably trying to say that you don't want to read another article on mental health, but please, give me a few more minutes of your time, and I'll change your mind. Mental health affects everyone in one way or another. It will impact everybody, so why don't we talk more about it?

 

MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and interpersonal well-being. It affects the way we think, feel, and behave. It also affects our stress management, social connections, and decision-making. Mental health is important at any age, including childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

Being a lash artist can be frustrating at the best of times, what with ungrateful clients, the uncertainty of not knowing where your next booking will come from, and even the loneliness that comes with lengthy periods of being alone.

ANXIETY

Anxiety does not discriminate. It can be your lash artist who is too stressed out taking clients because she doesn’t believe she’s good enough. It can be the lash artist who seems to have it all. But deep inside does not, and still has that voice inside her head that says she’s not good enough.

It can be the lash artist that takes 6-8 clients per day trying to please all her clients, but in the end, she doesn’t take care of herself emotionally and feels depressed and anxious.

It can be a happy, funny, loveable person. Someone who is an outspoken person or a shy person in the corner. A successful career-driven person or it can be those who suffered, those with trauma or those who have seen too much.

It can be the person who openly speaks about it or the person who you would never guess who deals with it in silence. Remember that being not okay is absolutely okay!

I’ll tell you that your feelings are all valid! We all been there, still experiencing, some conquered it already and ready to face the world. But for the rest who are still struggling? Don’t be afraid to reach out, find somebody you are comfortable telling your stories and feelings.

Know that you are not just acting up and doing some dramas, you are free to feel whatever you are feeling right now. Some days are not so good, some days you can be on top of your game, days that you don’t want to do anything at all. As I always say, we are your lash sisters, our community can be your safe place. Ask questions, ask for help, vent out!

Go back to lashing when you are holistically ready. Your mental health as a lash artist is important.

I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE SOME TIPS & TRICKS ON HOW TO COMBAT THESE ISSUES

As a lash artist, I have found that we must take care of ourselves before others. This means eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and taking time for yourself each day! If you cannot do this, it is time to reevaluate your priorities and see where you are lacking to make changes for yourself before helping others!

The next tip would be finding a balance between work and play! There is no shame in taking a break from work or doing something fun after work! We all deserve a break from time to time, and this should also include our jobs! Find something fun or relaxing to help clear your mind after a long day at work!

OTHER TIPS THAT MIGHT HELP:

1) In the morning, when you wake up, tell yourself that you will be okay. Say this as many times as needed until it sinks in.

2) Get out of bed and go for a walk in nature. It will help clear your mind and boost your mood.

3) Make a healthy diet with fresh fruit and vegetables. The more nutrients we get from our food, the better we feel!

4) Take time out every day for yourself - whether reading a book or having a bath - whatever makes you happy!

5) Make sure that you talk about how you are feeling with someone close to you (a friend/family member) at least once a week.

CONCLUSION

Mental health is often a taboo topic that most don't want to discuss. The reality is that it's essential to talk about it since many don't know what it is, how common it is, or how to help those with mental health disorders.

Mental health can affect your physical health and vice versa. Both are equally important to pay attention to! Even though mental health is something that has been around forever, a lot of people aren't educated on it. They aren't educated on mental health's importance to physical health.
