Mental health has been a topic most people are not open to talking about. I am a lash artist and I have been struggling with mental health issues ever since I began on this journey.
But what is mental health? Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Being a lash artist can be stressful at the best of times with the demands of ungrateful clients always being an issue, the anxiety of worrying about where your next booking will come from, and even the loneliness that hits from long periods of being on your own.
Anxiety does not discriminate. It can be your lash artist who is too stressed out taking clients because she doesn’t believe she’s good enough. It can be the lash artist who seems to have it all. But deep inside does not, and still has that voice inside her head that says she’s not good enough.
It can be the lash artist that takes 6-8 clients per day trying to please all her clients, but in the end, she doesn’t take care of herself emotionally and feels depressed and anxious.
It can be a happy, funny, loveable person. Someone who is an outspoken person or a shy person in the corner. A successful career-driven person or it can be those who suffered, those with trauma or those who have seen too much.
It can be the person who openly speaks about it or the person who you would never guess who deals with it in silence. Remember that being not okay is absolutely okay!
I’ll tell you that your feelings are all valid! We all been there, still experiencing, some conquered it already and ready to face the world. But for the rest who are still struggling? Don’t be afraid to reach out, find somebody you are comfortable telling your stories and feelings.
Know that you are not just acting up and doing some dramas, you are free to feel whatever you are feeling right now. Some days are not so good, some days you can be on top of your game, days that you don’t want to do anything at all. As I always say, we are your lash sisters, our community can be your safe place. Ask questions, ask for help, vent out!
Go back to lashing when you are holistically ready. Your mental health as a lash artist is important.
