What Is a Lash Lift?
A lash lift is like a perm for your eyelashes. It's a cosmetic procedure that adds curl and definition to your client’s natural lashes, making them look longer and fuller without the need for extensions. The effect can last anywhere from six to eight weeks, depending on the client's lash growth cycle.

- Clean and Prep
Start with clean, dry lashes. Make sure your client's lashes are free of makeup and oils. This helps the lifting solution adhere better and work its magic.
- Select the Right Rod Size
Lash rods are crucial for shaping the curl of the lash lift. They come in various sizes, so pick one that matches the length of your client’s lashes and the curl intensity they want. Shorter rods create a tighter curl, while longer rods give a gentler lift.
- Position the Lash Rod
Apply a gentle adhesive or balm on the lash rod and stick it to the eyelid, right above the lash line. This rod is where you'll mold the lashes into their new shape.
- Lift and Stick
Carefully lift the client’s lashes and press them against the rod. You might need to use a tool to help separate and stick the lashes evenly across the rod. This ensures a smooth, even curl.
- Apply the Lifting Solution
With precision, apply the lifting solution to the lashes. This solution softens the lashes, allowing them to mold to the shape of the lash rod. Be careful not to get any on the skin.
- Let It Set
The lifting solution needs time to process. This usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes, but always follow the timing specified by the product you’re using.
- Remove and Neutralize
After the processing time is up, gently remove the lifting solution with a dry wipe. Then, apply the neutralizing solution to set the lashes into their new position.
- Clean Up
Once the neutralizer has done its job, take off any residue and gently remove the lashes from the rod, revealing a beautifully lifted curl.
- Aftercare Tips
Advise your client to keep their lashes dry and avoid rubbing their eyes for the first 24 hours. This helps the lash lift set properly and last longer.

What is the difference between lash rods and lash shields?
As a lash artist, it’s essential to know the tools of the trade, particularly when it comes to lash lifts. Two key players in this process are lash rods and lash shields. While both have their place, let’s delve into why lash rods often take the spotlight in creating that perfect curl.

Lash Rods: The Go-To for Custom Curls
Lash rods are small, cylindrical tools that come in various sizes and are used to shape the natural lashes into a desired curl.
Their main advantage lies in their versatility.
You can achieve a range of curl intensities with lash rods—opt for a smaller rod for a tighter, more dramatic curl or a larger rod for a gentler, more natural lift. This makes lash rods a favorite for artists looking to offer a tailored experience to each client.
Lash Shields: The Contouring Companions
On the other hand, lash shields are curved pads that fit to the eyelid's natural contour.
They are fantastic for adapting to different eye shapes and ensuring a uniform lift across all lashes.
Lash shields can be particularly beneficial for clients with uniquely shaped eyes, as they help to create a consistent look that follows the natural lash line.

Why Lash Rods Often Win Out?
While lash shields are great for certain eye shapes and styles, lash rods are often the preferred choice for several reasons:

- Precision in Curl Control: With lash rods, you have more control over the curl. You can manipulate how much lift and curve you want to give each lash, which is harder to achieve with a one-size-fits-all shield.
- Adaptability to Lash Length: Lash rods cater to varying lash lengths better. They allow you to customize the curl based on how long or short the natural lashes are, giving a more tailored and refined result.
- Versatility in Styling: Lash rods enable you to create diverse looks. Whether your client desires a cat-eye effect or a more uniform curl, rods give you the flexibility to style the lashes in different ways.
- Comfort for the Client: Clients often find lash rods more comfortable. They’re easier to fit close to the lash line and can be less intimidating for those new to lash lifts.

Lash lift aftercare
Once the treatment is complete, aftercare is the key to making sure those lifted lashes last as long as possible.
Here's a list of 10 essential aftercare tips to give your clients so they can maintain their beautiful, lifted look:
Avoid Water for 24-48 Hours
Water can interfere with the setting process, so advise your clients to keep their lashes dry for at least 24 hours after their lift. This includes avoiding showers, steam rooms, and swimming.
No Mascara for 24-48 Hours
If your client had a lash tint alongside the lift, let them know to steer clear of mascara for at least 48 hours. This allows the tint and lift to fully set without interference.
Use Only Oil-Free Products
Oil can break down the lifting solution and cause the lashes to lose their curl sooner than expected. Recommend oil-free cleansers and makeup removers to keep the lift intact.
Avoid Sleeping on Your Face
Sleeping face-down can cause lashes to lose their shape, so it's best to suggest sleeping on their back or side to prevent squishing those newly lifted lashes.
No Rubbing or Touching
Advise your clients not to rub or touch their lashes excessively, as this can weaken the curl and disrupt the lift.
Avoid Hot Showers, Saunas, or Steam
Steam and extreme heat can break down the lift, especially in the first 48 hours. Clients should avoid saunas, hot tubs, and steamy environments to ensure longevity.
Regular Lash Brushing
Recommend clients brush their lashes gently every day using a clean spoolie to keep them looking neat and perfectly lifted.
Use a Lash Conditioner or Serum
Encourage your clients to apply a nourishing lash conditioner or serum to keep their lashes healthy and hydrated. This helps maintain the strength and flexibility of the lashes post-lift.
Stay Away from Waterproof Mascara
Waterproof mascara is difficult to remove and often requires oil-based removers, which can damage the lift. Advise clients to stick with regular mascara if they want to enhance their lashes.
Book a Touch-Up After 6-8 Weeks
A lash lift typically lasts 6-8 weeks, but clients can maintain the lifted look by scheduling regular touch-ups. Remind them to book their next appointment to keep their lashes looking fabulous year-round.
Pro Tip: Provide your clients with a small spoolie and an aftercare card to remind them of these tips—this extra touch keeps them informed and feeling cared for!
Conclusion
Practice makes perfect, especially with lash lifting. Start out working on friends or family until you’re confident. Every set of lashes is different, so the more you practice, the better you’ll understand the variations. Each lash lift you do can boost someone’s confidence, and that’s a pretty special thing.
