Eyelash Extensions: Cyanoacrylate Poisoning
All jobs in the world have a risk that we have to be aware of. Eyelash extension is such excellent work to do. However, we also have to protect ourselves from possible sickness. Believe it or not, the eyelash extension glue you use every day could be putting your health at immediate risk.
Many eyelash extension techs complained about their itchy eyes and irritated eyes. Some said they have watery eyes, and some are redness around the eyes. I am sure you have seen them too!
It is an exciting topic that I wanted to discuss because it has been a very common problem we lash techs can experience in our careers.

What is Cyanoacrylate Poisoning?
Cyanoacrylate is the main ingredient in most lash extension adhesives, and when used properly, it provides a strong and durable bond between the natural lash and the extension.
However, if the adhesive is inhaled or comes into contact with the skin or eyes, it can cause irritation, burning, and even allergic reactions. In extreme cases, it can lead to cyanoacrylate poisoning, which can cause serious health complications.
Let's talk about Cyanoacrylate Poisoning: I am sharing with all of you some of the symptoms a lot of lash techs have been experiencing when using lash glue:
- Runny Nose
- Dry or itchy eyes
- Headache
- Tightness in the chest
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Other flu-like symptoms
Cyanoacrylate poisoning or chronic exposure to Formaldehyde
Since lash artistry is still in its diaper stages, we don’t yet know the exact risks of all the hazardous materials we are exposed to especially when using lash glue.
Cyanoacrylate itself is not necessarily dangerous, however, in the process of our glue drying, it releases a gas called formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde can be potentially be dangerous for lash artists depending on how much of the fumes we are exposed to

Preventing Cyanoacrylate Poisoning
As a lash artist, it's essential to take measures to avoid cyanoacrylate poisoning from occurring. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Use proper ventilation: Make sure your workspace is well-ventilated to prevent the buildup of fumes from the adhesive.
- Proper application technique: Use the appropriate adhesive and avoid overloading the natural lash. Excess adhesive can increase the risk of fumes and contact with skin or eyes.
- Client education: Educate your clients on aftercare instructions and encourage them to avoid touching or rubbing their eyes.
By following these precautions, you can reduce the risk of cyanoacrylate poisoning during lash services and ensure the safety and well-being of both yourself and your clients. If you or a client experiences any symptoms of cyanoacrylate poisoning, seek medical attention immediately.
