How To Pick A Lash Curl For Your Client

What is lash curl style preferred for a client with straight lashes? Which is curlier, C or D? Which lash curl is the best? Can you mix C curl and D curl lashes?

When it comes to your client's eyelashes, picking the appropriate length and lash curl is very important.

I often get questions from clients on which curl they should pick. Typically, I prefer the curl depending on the look they are interested in and their eye shape.

With so many lash curl options available in the market, it can be challenging to find the best one for your client.

Below we have listed a few things to consider when choosing a lash curl:

How much lift does your client want?

Will the lashes suit their eye shape?

How natural does your client want the lashes to look?

Understanding Lash Curls

Before we match a curl to a client, let’s understand the different types:

Lash Curls

  • Curl B: It's the subtle one. Not flat, not too curly. For clients who want a ‘just woke up like this’ look.
  • Curl C: The go-to curl. It's noticeable and gives that open-eye effect without going overboard.
  • Curl C+: A bit more drama than C. Use it when clients say they want ‘a little something extra.’
  • Curl D: This one’s loud. It’s for clients who want full-on glam, the more curl, the better.
  • Curl CC: Think of this as C’s cooler big brother. It's a tad curlier without hitting D level drama.
  • Curl L: Got clients with hooded eyes? This one’s straight at the base and then flicks up sharply.
  • Curl L+: Like L, but with even more lift. Great for really opening up those hooded or deep-set eyes.
  • Curl M: It’s different – more of a swoop than a curl. It’s not common, but it’s cool for standing out.

Assessing Client's Natural Lashes

Your client’s natural lashes are your canvas. Here’s what to consider:

  • Length and Strength: Longer, stronger lashes can support heavier, curlier extensions. For shorter, weaker lashes, go lighter and softer.
  • Direction: If lashes naturally point downwards, a stronger curl can open up the eyes.
  • Growth Pattern: Be mindful of lashes that grow in different directions. A uniform curl might not be the best choice here.

Considering Eye Shape and Personal Style

Eye shape can make or break your curl choice:

  • Almond Eyes: Versatile! Most curls work, but C and D curls really accentuate that sultry almond shape.
  • Round Eyes: B or C curls complement by not overextending the eye’s roundness.
  • Hooded or Deep-Set Eyes: L or L+ curls can really open up these eye shapes.
  • Personal Style: Always chat with your client. What’s their daily routine? Do they prefer a natural look or something more dramatic?

Matching the Curl to Lifestyle

Lifestyle plays a huge part:

  • Active Clients: Consider a more natural, lower maintenance curl.
  • Glamour Seekers: They might prefer the wow factor of a D curl.
  • Professionals: A subtle B or C curl can be perfect for everyday wear.

Aftercare Tips

Educate your clients about aftercare:

  • Avoid water and steam for the first 24 hours.
  • Use oil-free makeup remover.
  • Gently brush them daily.
  • Avoid rubbing or pulling.

As you can see, all these curls will have different retention because the surface area the extension will adhere to the natural lash varies

Lash Curls

It's essential to master working with one curl and ensure excellent retention before moving to another lash curl. It's ideal to ensure that you do not have clients with specific lash curls coming back with poor lash retention. If bad retention occurs with a particular curl, it's essential to evaluate the surface area and practice it until the contact between the surface area is optimal.

The curls with the easiest and best retention tend to be the C curl, B curl, and L + L and M curls.

CONCLUSION

Remember, the right lash curl is not just about the look. It's about how it makes your clients feel – confident and beautiful. Stay curious, keep experimenting, and always listen to your clients’ needs. Happy lashing!

The curls with the least good lash retention tend to be the most rounded (curly). The D curl DD and the C + are the curls with the least favorable retention.
