1. The Importance of Proper Training

When I started, I underestimated the importance of comprehensive training. Quality training goes beyond just learning how to apply lashes—it includes understanding eye health, lash growth cycles, and safe application practices.

Investing in a reputable certification program is crucial, not just for skill development but also for building credibility and trust with clients.

2. Client Consultations Are Crucial

Before applying a single lash, thorough client consultations are essential. These meetings help assess the client's lash health, discuss desired outcomes, and spot any potential allergies or contraindications.

I learned that a successful outcome heavily depends on how well you understand and manage client expectations.

3. Mastering Isolation Takes Time

Isolating a single natural lash for extension application is a skill that requires patience and practice. Initially, I didn’t realize how challenging this could be, especially with different lash types and eye shapes.

It’s a meticulous task that is crucial for preventing damage to natural lashes and ensuring the longevity of the extensions.

4. Allergies and Reactions Are Part of the Job

Even with the best practices, some clients may develop reactions to lash adhesives or under-eye pads. Early in my career, I was startled by how common this could be. Now, I make it a point to discuss potential reactions during consultations and keep hypoallergenic products on hand.

5. The Business Side is as Important as the Artistic Side

Running a successful lash business isn’t just about doing lashes. Marketing, scheduling, inventory management, and customer service are equally important.

Learning how to manage these aspects efficiently took time but was essential for business growth.

6. Keeping Up with Trends and Continuing Education

Lash trends evolve rapidly. What was popular a year ago might not be today. Continuous education has been vital to stay relevant and competitive.

Attending workshops, industry conferences, and following leading lash artists helped me keep up with new techniques and trends.

7. The Physical Toll of the Job

Lash technicians often work long hours while sitting in awkward positions, which can lead to back and neck pain, eye strain, and hand fatigue.

I wish I had known the importance of ergonomics in the workspace earlier, which includes investing in a good chair, proper lighting, and regular breaks to stretch.

8. Building a Loyal Clientele Takes Time

Patience is key when building a client base. It didn’t happen overnight for me. Providing excellent service, maintaining professionalism, and leveraging word-of-mouth referrals gradually built my clientele.

Client retention strategies, such as follow-up messages and loyalty discounts, have also been crucial.

9. Setting Realistic Financial Expectations

Initially, the income can be unpredictable. It’s important to set realistic financial expectations and have a budget plan.

Understanding pricing strategies, cost of supplies, and managing cash flow are critical to maintaining a stable income.

10. Work-Life Balance

Lastly, maintaining a work-life balance is crucial. The flexible schedule is a perk, but it can also lead to overworking.

Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time has been essential for my well-being.

Conclusion

Starting as a lash tech is more than learning how to apply beautiful lashes. It involves understanding the science behind it, honing your business acumen, and continuously evolving with the industry. Knowing these things beforehand would have smoothed my path, but the journey of learning them has also been rewarding. If you’re considering this career, go into it with open eyes and a willingness to continuously learn and adapt.
