1. Talk Before You Start
Always ask during the intake if your client has eye issues, including light sensitivity. Some may not bring it up unless you ask. A short talk before the lash extension process builds trust. It also helps you plan the session better.
Tip: Keep a checkbox for "light sensitivity" on your client form.
2. Use a Lower Light Setting
Bright lights help you see fine lashes. But for clients with light sensitivity, they can cause pain or tears. Try using a dimmable LED lash lamp. Set it just bright enough to work safely. Lowering brightness helps avoid eye strain.
Tip: Place light behind the head, not above the face.
3. Offer Eye Pads with Cooling Effect
Some under-eye pads can give a cooling feel. This helps soothe the eye area and reduce discomfort. You can store pads in a clean fridge before use. Be sure the pads are smooth and not too thick.
Tip: Use gel pads that do not reflect light.
4. Avoid Flashlights or Phone Lights
Sometimes lash artists use phone flashlights for quick checks. Avoid this for sensitive clients. Sudden light flashes can shock the eyes. Rely on your main lamp or natural light if possible.
5. Close the Curtain or Dim the Room
A dark room helps reduce eye tension. If your lash studio has a window, close the curtain. If possible, use warm light instead of white light. This creates a more relaxing space for clients who are light-sensitive.
6. Give a Verbal Cue Before Turning On the Light
Before switching on the lash light, let the client know. A short "I’m turning the light on now" helps them brace for it. This small step shows care and makes the client feel safe.
7. Take Short Breaks If Needed
If the client starts blinking or tearing often, take a short pause. A minute or two can help. Use this time to gently clean the lashes or adjust position. Don’t rush. It’s better to move slow than risk a bad lash set.
8. Use Lash Glue with Low Fume
Some glue types release fumes that make light sensitivity worse. Look for lash adhesive that is low in fumes. This can help reduce eye redness or stinging during and after the session.
9. Ask for Feedback After the Session
Once you finish, ask how the client feels. This gives them space to share what helped or what didn’t. If you adjust based on that, the next visit will be better. Clients notice this kind of care.
