Self-Care Secrets for the Overworked Lash Artist

As lash artists, we often immerse ourselves in the meticulous work of lash application, focusing on providing beauty and confidence to our clients. But, amidst the fanning, filling, and fluffing, it's crucial to recognize the red flags of our mental health needs.

What is mental health? Mental health affects how you think, feel, and deal with relationships and situations. Mental health can change day-to-day and also over time. It is a bigger issue than most people realize, so many hesitate to speak out against it.

Mental health has been a topic most people are not open to talking about. I am a lash artist, and I have struggled with mental health issues since I began this journey. Being honest about my struggles and discussing them may help someone who has similar struggles or has friends/family struggling.

What is a red flag for a lash artist?

A red flag could be anything from chronic fatigue despite adequate rest, to a lack of enthusiasm for work that once brought joy. For example, if you find yourself dreading the start of each appointment or feeling unusually irritable when a client asks for a touch-up, it’s time to pause and reflect.

What makes a good lash artist?

A good lash artist is not only skilled with their hands but also with their heart. Empathy, patience, and the ability to connect with clients are as crucial as the precision of their tweezers. Remember the time a client shared a personal story while you worked? That connection is part of the artistry.

What not to do as a lash artist?

Don't ignore the signs of burnout. Continuously pushing through exhaustion, skipping breaks, or neglecting personal needs for the sake of back-to-back appointments will harm your well-being.

The Problem

Many lash artists fall into the trap of overworking due to the nature of the beauty industry, where personal interaction is intense and the physical demands are high. The strain of maintaining a steady hand and the focus required for hours can lead to both physical and mental fatigue. For instance, you might experience a stiff back after a long day or feel mentally drained from concentrating on tiny lashes for extended periods

The Fix

Here's what you can do if you find yourself struggling:

  • Set Boundaries: Don't overbook yourself. Allow time between clients to rest and reset. This might mean saying no to that last-minute booking request or setting a strict schedule.
  • Take Regular Breaks: Even short breaks can significantly reduce strain. Stand up, stretch, and rest your eyes. Remember how refreshed you felt after that five-minute walk outside last Tuesday? Make it a habit.
  • Practice Self-Care: Invest in a comfortable chair, use ergonomic tools, and remember to look after your body. Regular exercise, like yoga or pilates, can alleviate physical strain. And don't forget about your mental health; activities like meditation or journaling can be incredibly beneficial.
  • Seek Professional Help: If you're feeling overwhelmed, talk to a therapist. A problem shared is a problem halved. That session you had with a counselor last month? It’s okay to make that a regular thing.
  • Connect with Community: Build relationships with other lash artists. Sharing experiences and solutions, like you did at the lash artists' meet-up, can provide both support and new perspectives.
  • Educate Yourself: Attend workshops not only about lash techniques but also about business and self-management. That seminar on work-life balance for beauty professionals? It can offer great tools for managing stress.
  • Rest and Recuperate: Give yourself full days off where work is off-limits. Remember the clarity you felt after your last day off? Your mind and body need that downtime.
