When starting a new business, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the number of decisions you have to make. There's information on the internet. There are many opinions about what works and what doesn't, and it can be challenging to figure out where to start.

That's why we've put together this guide — to help give you some basic information on how to choose between renting a lash studio or becoming a mobile lash tech.

Renting a lash room or space can be expensive, but it also gives you more control over your business. You can work as long as you want, set your hours, and generally do things "your way".

However, many newer lash artists are choosing to go mobile — they are offering services at their client's home or workplace instead of in a rented space or salon. This is an excellent option for many people: it doesn't require a lot of capital up-front (you don't have to rent space or buy equipment), and it allows more flexibility with scheduling and clients.

WHAT IS A MOBILE LASH TECH?

A mobile lash tech is a freelance lash technician who provides services in the client's home or any other convenient location. They bring all the necessary tools and equipment to perform a service. They are sometimes referred to as house-call beauticians or on-demand beauty professionals.

For some clients, this is more comfortable than going to a salon. Some even suggest that you will be more relaxed when you do your lashes at home and won't feel like you have to rush through the appointment.

PROS AND CONS OF MOBILE LASH TECH

There are many pros and cons to being a mobile lash tech, but it's all about what works for you. The mobile lash business is booming, but this doesn't mean it's the best fit for every lash artist. It takes a specific type of person to run an effective and efficient mobile business. Lash artists who can work in a tiny space, have the energy to carry all their equipment with them, and can successfully multitask in unexpected situations are perfect for this line of work.

If you're still on the fence about starting your own mobile business, here's a list of pros and cons to help make your decision easier!

Pros and cons of mobile lash tech

PROS

  • Less money invested in setup. No need to buy fancy furniture or decor.
  • Mobile lash techs can perform services at their client's home or a chosen location.
  • You don't have to pay rent for a spot. Lower overhead (rent, electricity)
  • Space constraints do not limit you since you can take all your equipment wherever you go.
  • You can move around your schedule based on the best time for your clients.
  • You can move from one place to another quickly if you need to.

CONS

  • You may have to travel in inclement weather.
  • You may waste time having to drive to different locations. You also need to consider traffic and parking fees. Or more time wasted on commuting (unless you live in a big city where everything is around you).
  • It may be harder to build a clientele because people search for lash artists based on location instead of services offered.
  • Working from home can be fun, but some clients are not comfortable coming to your house for a service like eyelash extensions. This can be a negative factor for your business.
  • Some clients don't like having their lashes done at home if it gets messy or a chemical smell is left behind in the house after the appointment. Though, most of these issues can be minimized by using proper ventilation and cleaning products that don't leave any bad smells behind.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LASH STUDIO?

If you're a mobile lash tech and think of opening a lash studio, renting a lash room could be an alternative. This allows you to start with a minimum investment and grow your business at your own pace.

There are many factors to consider when searching for a location to rent for your lash business. Here is a list of questions to ask yourself:

Where will it be located? Will it be convenient to get to from major freeways and other landmarks near me? Is it easy or difficult to find parking at the location? What is the walkability score like? The better the score for walkability, the better. Walkability addresses how friendly an area is for walking. Walkable neighborhoods usually mean more foot traffic, which can be great for business, primarily if you are located in a shopping center or plaza with other businesses that complement yours.

In addition, being near shops, restaurants, parks, etc., also makes it easier for your clients as they won't have to go far after their appointments if they would like to grab lunch or shop around.

A good location is essential. You want your clients to find you so they don't get lost and miss their appointment. If you choose the right place, you can be sure that your clientele will increase in a short period. Proximity to other businesses is also essential for advertising purposes.

If you're located in the same building as a spa or a facial salon, this will help your marketing efforts and let people know that you offer lash services. You can also promote your business on every door or window in the building where you rent space. Ensure that the location has proper lighting, heating/air conditioning and ventilation, and enough seating for your client's comfort.

PROS AND CONS OF RENTING A LASH ROOM

The beauty industry has always been a large and diverse market, but it seems to be growing at the speed of light. With salons and spas popping up on every corner, finding your niche in the market is essential.

If you want to rent a lash studio, there are many pros and cons. It is good to weigh them all carefully before making a decision. If you're interested in renting a lash room, here are some things to consider before signing any long-term lease:

PROS

  • You do not have to invest in the renovation or construction of space.
  • You can pay rent monthly instead of paying for a lease upfront.
  • You can dip your toes into the lash business without incurring high start-up costs.
  • You have your own space that is all yours to decorate as you want. You can do this with your own money or with the help of your lash room. Make it YOUR place and make it feel like HOME. We have a great resource on how to decorate and style your lash room on a budget!
  • You are not limited to having your lash room only at home. You can rent a space outside of the house if you wish. The studio you're renting from will most likely have a website that generates leads for the studio, which you can advertise on.
  • No need to travel anywhere
  • You can take advantage of the salon's existing marketing strategies (if they have any) and referrals from the front desk. Plus, you'll get more exposure than if you had your own space.

CONS

  • It will cost you more money in the long run than just being mobile, but only if you don't have enough clients to fill up your room consistently.
  • It takes a lot more marketing to get clients than when you are mobile because you have to get them to come to you and not just meet them wherever they want. This is why I recommend starting mobile before renting a lash room (if that is what you wish to) so that when you do get one, you already have a loyal clientele base, and they will follow you wherever!
  • There's no such thing as job security! If the salon closes down (if you are renting in a salon setup) or decides to let go of its lash artists, you'll have to find yourself another place to rent at. And sometimes it's not easy finding available places for rent!

Can I do lash extensions at home?

If you're considering working from home, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Legalities: Check your local regulations to ensure you can legally run a business from your home.
  • Space: You'll need a dedicated, professional area that is comfortable for both you and your clients.
  • Work-Life Balance: Keeping your work separate from your home life can be challenging.

CONCLUSION

Renting a lash studio is usually high, but it can be worth the cost if you intend to grow your lash extension business. When you rent a lash studio, you have to pay for the location, furnish it, and pay for advertising to get your name out there. But when you have your studio, you have an advantage over other lash techs who are not in a studio because clients will find it more professional when they come to you.

Mobile lash techs are often cheaper than renting a lash studio, but it can take time to build up clients and trust with them. Some of the challenges of being a mobile lash tech include having less space to perform the lashes and fewer supplies on hand.

When choosing between being a mobile lash tech or renting a lash studio, we recommend choosing what works best for your budget and what seems like it would help you build your business properly.
