Why You Should Clean Your Eyelash Extensions

As a lash artist, one of the most common questions I get from clients is whether they should clean their eyelash extensions. The short answer is yes!

Clean lashes not only look better, but they also last longer and stay healthier.

Here’s why cleaning your eyelash extensions is crucial for both their appearance and longevity.

The Importance of Lash Care

Eyelash extensions are an investment. You want them to last, look great, and stay healthy, right? Regular cleaning is key to achieving all of these. Without proper care, the lashes can become weighed down by dirt, oils, and makeup residue.

This can lead to irritation, infections, and poor retention. Just like any beauty treatment, lash care is essential for getting the best results.

Preventing Build-Up and Dirt

Throughout the day, dirt, makeup, oils, and environmental pollutants can settle on your lashes. Over time, this build-up can cause irritation and even affect the bond between your natural lashes and the extensions. When left uncleaned, the residue can make lashes look dull and clumpy.

Cleaning your lashes helps prevent the build-up of unwanted substances, ensuring your lashes stay fresh and clean. This simple step can make a huge difference in both the appearance and feel of your extensions.

Promoting Lash Health

Healthy natural lashes are crucial for lash retention. Dirt and oils clog hair follicles, which can affect lash growth. By keeping your lashes clean, you prevent the risk of clogging hair follicles and potential lash loss.

Regular cleaning helps maintain the health of your natural lashes by removing oils and debris that could otherwise contribute to irritation or infections like blepharitis. Healthy lashes lead to longer-lasting extensions.

Boosting Retention

Retention is all about how well your extensions stay in place. When your lashes are clean, the adhesive has a better surface to bond to. Dirt, oils, and makeup can weaken the bond, causing extensions to fall off sooner than expected.

Clean lashes help the glue hold better, resulting in longer-lasting extensions.  The more regularly you clean your lashes, the better your retention will be.

How to Clean Your Lashes Properly

It’s not enough to just wash your lashes; you need to do it the right way.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Use a Lash Shampoo: Choose a gentle, oil-free lash shampoo. Do not use harsh facial cleansers, as they may contain oils or chemicals that can damage the extensions.

Wet Your Lashes: Splash your face with lukewarm water or use a damp cotton pad to moisten your lashes gently. Avoid soaking them completely, as too much water can weaken the adhesive bond.

Apply the Shampoo: Apply a small amount of lash shampoo to a clean brush or spoolie. Gently brush the shampoo through your lashes in an upward motion. Avoid rubbing or tugging too hard.

Rinse Thoroughly: Use water to rinse your lashes carefully. Be sure to remove all shampoo, as any residue can irritate the eyes or lead to build-up.

Dry Your Lashes: Pat your lashes gently with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing or pulling at them. Then, allow them to air dry completely. You can use a lash fan or blow dryer (on a cool setting) to speed up the drying process if needed.

What to Use to Clean the Lashes

Not all products are suitable for cleaning eyelash extensions.

Here are the best tools and products to use:

Oil-Free Lash Shampoo: Oil-free formulas ensure that the adhesive remains intact and your lashes stay clean.

Microfiber Brushes: These are gentle on the lashes and allow you to clean them without causing damage or pulling.

Lash Spoolie: A spoolie is perfect for brushing through your lashes, ensuring that they stay tangle-free and clean.

Lash Wands or Brushes: These are designed specifically to clean your lashes without affecting the extensions.

Avoid using products that contain oils, alcohol, or harsh chemicals. These can break down the adhesive and cause premature shedding of your lashes.
