If the foot of the fan is long, when the fan is applied, there could be some sparse areas on the lashes. Premade lashes are fans that have already been created for lash artists. It was placed in a tray that could be picked up and used right away. Clustered lashes are not the same as pre-made lashes. A premade fan is an arrangement of two to eight lashes that have been glued or heat-bonded together at the base. The purpose behind premade fans is that they allow lash artists to save time and eliminates the need to create fans manually. The act of gluing the lashes together gives the fan base more volume. The base becomes much thicker after being coated in adhesive. Just like any other type of lashes, the damage will only happen if you are applying them in the wrong way, and not taking notice of how heavy the fans are. They are made to be applied using the same method as you would apply individual semi-permanent lashes. The risk of damage is greatly reduced thanks to good isolation and less adhesive.   Many lash stylists are understandably against the use of pre-made fans, as they have practiced thousands of hours and spent dollars toward perfecting the craft of creating volume fans by hand. So actually the way premade fan lash extensions are made with assistance from a machine. It works by placing a row of tiny PBT threads on a lash tray, then heat-bonding or using a little amount of glue to attach the roots. The PBT threads are rolled into the desired lash curl once the roots have been properly attached to the glue, and they are also processed and heated to keep the curl. The final step of the process is for the lash factory workers to actually manually separate each individual fan in order to attach them to the adhesive strip on the lash tray. The final step is to package them and ship them out.   One of the biggest drawbacks I can think of is the fact that premade volume fans don’t allow for as much customization in your lash art. The way I see it, it is much harder to customize your lash fans according to your client’s request. Lash artists can pick between long-leg lash fans and short-leg lash fans. Because the fans have already been created, a lash artist cannot, for example, make them narrower. It is also not possible to easily adjust the number of fans the lash artist will use, from a 3D to a 6 D for example, since the fans are already complete. A lot of clients don’t necessarily care about if the lash artist makes her own fans or uses pre-made fans, they are about getting in and out quickly and making sure their lashes last. HEAT BONDED Heat bonded means that the base of the fan is only held together by heat. Why shouldn't you use glue bonded?  This initial sort of pre-made fan, with the glue, is NOT approved for client usage, according to several lash stylists and they are correct. What is the correct way to dip your eyelashes in lash glue?  How much of your eyelash extension should be dipped in glue?  Since a lot of lash artists have questions regarding their client’s retention, I figured I would make a post regarding one of the factors that can affect your client’s retention the most.  First, let me say that all eyelash glues are not created equal. Some adhesives have different consistencies and will bond differently with each other. Some are thick, and some are thin. Some clump easier than others, and some do not clump if you don’t add too much water. The way you dip your lash fans in the adhesive will have a very important impact on your clients’ retention. Here is a diagram below, describing the best way to dip your lashes in our adhesive. Ideally, you should never glaze the lashes on top of the adhesive, as this will not add enough adhesive, and can result in poor lash retention.   You should also avoid dipping the lash on the bottom of the glue drop, as your lash will be dipping in glue. The ideal way is to dip about 1-3 mm of the lash tip into the middle of your adhesive drop.  This will ensure you have just the right amount of glue in order to ensure great retention. If there is not enough adhesive, the client's lashes will fall out prematurely. Additionally, if the lashes have an excessive amount of adhesive, there will be other issues associated with stickies. The reason for this being, after about 20 minutes the glue starts drying out, and will not bond as efficiently to your client’s lash. This can have a negative impact on your client’s retention. Make sure your glue drop is large enough. There will be enough working surface area for this glue to be effective. Remember as soon as you drop your glue drop, it starts to polymerize. This means that the outer diameter of your adhesive is already useless. You need to get what is in the middle of the drop as it is the freshest adhesive, and this is what you want to be working with. Otherwise, your fresh glue will polymerize faster than necessary due to the fumes of the old glue drops nearby. Do not dip your lash fan on the top or bottom of the adhesive drop. This is the glue that has already started to dry and is suboptimal to work with. You need to dip your lash fan in the middle of the glue drop in order to get the glue that is the freshest consistency to work with. Don’t forget to shake your adhesive prior to putting out a new glue drop. It’s ideal to shake your adhesive for a minimum of 1 min. High viscosity glues are thicker and offer more control during application, ideal for artists who are still perfecting their technique. Low viscosity glues are thinner, dry faster, and are suited for more experienced artists. Drying Time: Glues can vary from having a drying time of 1 second to several seconds. Faster drying glues demand quick application and are best for experienced artists, while slower drying options are forgiving and better for learners. Ingredients: Cyanoacrylate is the primary adhesive component. Variations like Ethyl, Methyl, and Butyl, each have different properties affecting durability, flexibility, and sensitivity. Always check for any client allergies to these ingredients. 2. Storage and Shelf Life Store your glue in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Unopened glue typically lasts around six months, while an opened bottle should be replaced every four to eight weeks to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety. 3. Preparation for Application Before applying, make sure the client’s lashes are clean and free from oils or makeup. Shake the glue bottle for about 30 seconds to mix the contents thoroughly. Dispense a drop of glue on a jade stone or disposable glue holder to keep it cool during application. 4. Application Technique Dip 1-2mm of the extension into the glue. A common mistake is over-dipping, which can lead to clumpy results and uncomfortable lash wear. Swipe the extension against the natural lash from root to tip, ensuring a seamless bond without any beads of glue showing. 5. Controlling Humidity and Temperature The optimal humidity for most eyelash extension glues is between 45% and 60%, with a room temperature around 70-72°F. Use a hygrometer to monitor these conditions in your workspace. Adjust your air conditioning or use a humidifier/dehumidifier as necessary. 6. Curing the Glue After application, the glue should not be exposed to moisture for at least 24 hours. Inform your client to avoid showers, saunas, or heavy workouts during this period to ensure the glue cures properly and the lashes last longer. 7. Dealing with Irritations Sometimes, despite best practices, clients might experience irritation. Always have a saline solution and fume-neutralizing drops on hand to alleviate any discomfort for your clients. 8. Aftercare Advice Advise clients on proper lash maintenance to extend the longevity of their extensions. The lash extension might need to be removed to give the natural lashes a rest. Your client may want a new set of eyelash extensions. The client might be dissatisfied with a set done elsewhere and want them removed. Some clients may develop an allergy or sensitivity to eyelash extensions, often due to the glue or the ingredient called carbon black. As lash artists, one of the most common concerns we encounter is red eyes after a lash extension appointment. But what causes red eyes, and how can we prevent them? This post breaks down the causes of red eyes, how to understand them better, and practical ways to prevent and handle them in the lash room.   New to lash photo editing? So what causes this irritation?   Adhesive Particles: Lash glue releases tiny particles into the air. Similar to how nail technicians wear masks to protect themselves from fumes, it’s essential to be mindful of the tiny particles in the air.   Body’s Defense: When particles from the adhesive land on the eye, the body reacts by dilating the blood vessels in the eye. This is a defense mechanism, not a sign of burning. The eye turns red as part of the body’s way of protecting itself from foreign particles.   Understanding the Eye’s Tear Film The eye’s tear film is composed of three layers: Mucin Layer (Sticky Layer): Keeps the eye moist and protected. Aqueous Layer (Watery Layer): Provides hydration to the eye. Lipid Layer (Oil Layer): Prevents the watery layer from evaporating. When applying lash extensions, the natural tear film is disrupted. Additionally, under-eye pads and tape can make it harder for the tear film to function properly, leaving the eye vulnerable to glue particles and irritation.   Why Do Red Eyes Happen During Lash Appointments Red eyes during lash appointments are primarily caused by disruption to the tear film. Here’s why: Disruption of Tear Film: During the procedure, the client keeps their eyes closed for an extended period. This interferes with the tear film’s ability to protect the eye. Lack of Blinking: Without blinking, the tear film isn't replenished, which means the eye is more vulnerable to irritants like adhesive particles. Eye Pads: Under-eye pads can flatten the eyelid margins, making it difficult for the tear film to work as it should, increasing the chance of irritation.   For more tips like this one be sure to subscribe to our email list, we send very informative and helpful emails every week, please click here.   Eyelash Extension Allergy vs. Irritation: Understanding the Difference Signs Eyelash Extension Allergy Eyelash Extension Irritation Redness Intense, severe redness, especially in the white part of the eye (sclera) Mild redness, usually not as severe or widespread Swelling Noticeable swelling around the eyes and eyelids Minimal to no swelling Itching Persistent itching around the eyes or eyelids Occasional mild itching Tearing Excessive tearing or watery eyes Minor dryness, occasional watery eyes Rash or Hives Possible rash or hives around the eyes or eyelids No rash or hives present Duration of Symptoms Symptoms last longer, may worsen over time Temporary discomfort that fades within a few hours or days Cause Immune system reaction to ingredients (e.g., lash glue, lash materials) Caused by minor irritants like fumes, glue particles, or pressure from pads Treatment May require medical attention, hypoallergenic adhesives, or avoidance of the allergen Hydrating eye drops, rest, and monitoring of symptoms   Understanding Lash Adhesive Ingredients Most lash adhesives contain ingredients that can irritate the eyes. Here are some key components: Cyanoacrylate: This is the main ingredient in most lash glues. While it's safe for use in lash extensions, it’s still a known irritant for both skin and eyes. The fumes it emits can cause eye irritation. Acrylate: Another ingredient used in adhesives. Although it’s generally less reactive than cyanoacrylate, it can still cause irritation in some people. Microscopic Particles: Adhesive gives off small particles that can settle on the surface of the eye, causing irritation and redness. Here’s how you can reduce the risk of your clients experiencing irritation: Replenish the Tear Film: Keep the eyes hydrated throughout the appointment to prevent dryness and irritation. Use preservative-free, single-use eye drops like Refresh. These drops are designed to hydrate the eye and provide protection. Avoid Fans: While it may seem like a good idea to use a fan to dry the glue, fans can actually dry out the eyes and exacerbate the problem. They also don’t remove the irritating particles from the air. Proper Pad Placement: Ensure that under-eye pads are placed gently without flattening the eyelid margins. This allows the tear film to protect the eye more effectively and prevents additional irritation. What to Do if Red Eyes Occur If a client does experience red eyes, here’s how you can help them manage it: Educate Your Clients: Let them know that red eyes are usually caused by temporary irritation and are not a sign of a serious injury or infection. Recommend Hydration: Suggest that clients use eye drops like Refresh. These drops are safe and preservative-free, designed to hydrate and soothe the eye. Explain the Process: If a client calls about red eyes after their appointment, reassure them that this is likely from glue particles and not from poor hygiene or unclean tools. What Not to Use Some common products that may seem helpful but can make things worse: Red-Out Drops (Like Visine): These drops contain vasoconstrictors, which temporarily reduce redness by shrinking blood vessels. However, they also prevent the eye from flushing out irritants, making the healing process slower and more painful. Large Bottles of Eye Drops: These can easily get contaminated and may contain preservatives that could irritate the eyes. Always recommend single-use vials to ensure safety and hygiene. Saline Solution as a Substitute: While saline can help rinse the eye, it doesn’t hydrate as well as proper eye drops like Refresh. Apply paper tape to secure the patches if your client's eyes are sensitive and watery during the application of extensions. Reassure them that while it is uncomfortable, it is usually temporary and will improve with proper care and time. Conclusion: Prevention is Key As a lash artist, it’s essential to understand that red eyes are often caused by irritation, not burns or abrasions.
